Steps to Take to File a Flood Damage Claim

Flood Damage Claim

Floods are unpredictable and can happen at any time for a variety of reasons. Whether the floodwaters are triggered by a tornado, a hurricane, torrential rains or an overflowing river, one thing is clear. It pays to have insurance that covers flood damages when they occur.

Filing a claim for flood damage requires following several steps before your payment is issued. The steps include:

  • Notify your insurance company – Let your insurance company know that a flood has occurred and your home was damaged by it. When you contact your insurer to file a claim, you need to give them your contact number and information so they can get back to you as soon as they are able. You should also provide them with your policy number for faster processing. They should send an adjuster to your property to assess the damage a few days after your call.
  • Document the extent of the damage – You need to do this before you start cleaning up. Take pictures of everything, write down what damage you see, and separate the items that are damaged by those that are not. If you have receipts for the damaged items, try to find them so you can provide them to your adjuster for your claim. Don’t throw away the damaged items until your adjuster sees and assesses them.
  • Prepare a Proof of Loss Statement – To complete your flood damage claim, you will need to complete and sign a proof of loss statement. This is used to certify the damage you are claiming after the adjuster has inspected the area. This has to be filed within 60 days of the flood and is used to substantiate the claim being made for damages. No payment can be made until this form is submitted.

Once you have completed these steps, you are eligible to file a claim and receive payment from your insurance company. If flooding in your area is deemed catastrophic and a lot of people are filing claims at the same time, delays can be expected in the processing of your flood damage claim.
